Drinking Water To Help With Acne

A lot of people might say to someone who has bad acne, “just drink more water, and it will go away!”

But here is the short answer: it definitely is important and may help, but not the cure-all when it comes to getting rid of acne.

There are lots of other factors that can contribute to acne, like poor diet, wearing comedogenic makeup, genetics, etc.

Simply adding more water to help with your acne may improve it, but most likely won’t get rid of it.

So, what does drinking water do for your skin and body?

Like I said before, even though water doesn’t completely cure acne you should still make sure you get your 8 glasses in daily! There are lots of other benefits to it, and I will explain below how it works to improve acne and your complexion.

Water Helps Keep Skin Hydrated

Everyone knows that they should drink water to keep their body hydrated. That also goes for the largest organ of the body: the skin!

Having a healthy, hydrated skin barrier is one of the most necessary components of “normal” acne-free skin. Drinking lots of water helps it function properly. When the lipid barrier is not working right, “…there is a body of literature that supports the concept that AV (acne vulgaris) is associated with inherent abnormalities in epidermal barrier functions.

So while it may help improve acne, drinking water will help your skin look less dry and rough. This overall improves the look of your skin!

Water Helps Flush Out Toxins

I wrote an article stating why what you eat matters when it comes to treating acne.

There is such a thing as the gut-skin connection.

What I ate reflected through my skin and body.

Sugar is also known to aggravate acne, which can explain at least some of my constant breakouts.

This is something that I am so glad I learned about. Fixing what I ate solved so many problems for me. I felt and looked better. My whole body was more nourished and wasn’t bogged down by toxic foods.

Talking about sugar leads me to the next point.

Drinking water can “In addition to preventing dehydration, it helps your kidneys flush out any excess sugar through urine.” Healthline

This is great because as I mentioned above, bad foods like sugar can wreak havoc on your skin. Flush out all that sugar by drinking lots of water! This is another reason why drinking water can help acne. It stops sugar from aggravating your skin and causing acne from the sugar inflammation.

So, to sum it up, “In particular, it may help keep your skin hydrated, support immune function, regulate blood sugar levels, and promote natural detoxification — all of which can help fight acne.” Healthline

If anything I know that when I drink lots of water throughout the day it helps me feel my best. You should be doing it too!

Best, Mia
